Realistic Explosion & Debris VFX for Action Film Trailers

Action trailers need impact shots that feel tangible and dangerous. I composite realistic explosion effects, flying debris, dust clouds and shockwaves into your live-action plates, matching lighting, camera motion and atmosphere so the effects look like they were captured on set. This service is built for editors and directors who have a great shot but need that extra layer of cinematic destruction to sell the stakes.
You provide the plate footage and I handle the full VFX pipeline. I start with high-fidelity 3D simulation for the primary explosion and debris, then layer in practical dust elements and heat distortion for integration. The final delivery includes the fully composited shot in ProRes 4444 for maximum quality, along with a multi-layer EXR sequence giving you control over the explosion, debris passes, and atmospheric elements like smoke and dust. You also get the clean PNG sequence and the After Effects project file with all layers intact, allowing for last-minute tweaks to color or timing.
This photorealistic approach works because it respects physics. Debris follows proper trajectories, smoke interacts with the environment light, and the explosion’s bloom reacts to the scene’s exposure. I reference real-world explosives and slow-motion footage to get the timing and scale right, avoiding the cartoonish pop that plagues stock VFX. My toolkit includes Houdini for simulation and Nuke for deep compositing, which lets me properly integrate elements behind foreground objects like actors or structures.
It’s a fit for indie film trailers, action short films and high-impact commercial projects where practical effects were too costly or risky to shoot. Having created VFX for over thirty independent action projects, I understand the budget and time constraints. My goal is to give you a final shot that elevates the sequence without requiring a back-and-forth about realism. The technical details are handled so you can focus on the cut.
